In the year 1877, Thomas Alva Edison reproduced the tune Mary had a Little Lamb from a piece of tin-foil wrapped around a spinning cylinder. He developed this invention while he was working on two other inventions; the telephone and the telegraph. Edison patented his phonograph on December 24, 1877. He took hios invention to Scientific America in New York and showed the workers his invention. It gained much interest with the scientists. On January 24, 1878, Edison established the Edison Speaking Phonograph Company. He did this so that the public could view the phonograph. Edison recieved $10,000 for the manufacturing and sales right, he also was given 20% of the profits. Everybody loved the new invention, but it was very difficult for the public to operate, and the tin-foil would stop working after a few playings.
Alexander Graham Bell made improvements on Edison's design. He used wax instead of tin-foil and the efficiency of the phonograph was greatly improved. He called his invention the graphaphone. In 1887, Emile Berliner, recieved a patent on a flat disc gramaphone, which made the selling of multiple copies a reality. Marconi experimented and was succesful in creating a transatlantic message, which gave us the dream of talking to other countries fast and effectively. Many more inventions further developed the speaking machine, turning it into neccessities of everyday life today. The radio, the iphone, videos with sound, and many more, all started with the phonograph.
The Future of the Phonograph by Alyssa Manley
The phonograph was basically just a record player invented back in the late 1800's. In the present time the phonograph has been upgraded to Ihomes, radios, ipods. In the future i believe that the phonograph will be completely wireless and will be able to be taken anywhere. It will be smaller than today, and will be used for much more than enjoyment. In the past, the phonograph was used to replay records, listen to music, or listen to important messages by record. Today people can listen to the radio (new phonograph) or use the ihome which is a speaker to make your ipod or phone louder. In the future the ihome (phonograph improved) will be an app on the ipone or smartphones. ipods(records) are already apps. The ihome is not yet wireless, but i am sure it will be in the future due to the growing technology of today.
